Some Women Have Hard Lives
I just finished Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (book #17) by Lisa See. I really enjoyed being immersed into a completely foreign world, but the world itself - China in the late seventeenth century - was an extremely twisted place given my twenty-first century outlook.
To think of seldom leaving the "upstairs women's chamber" or having bound feet, or being subservient to men at all times - and having that be just the way life is - is horrifying. It is hard to imagine a world so restricted and one's potential being defined at the moment of your birth.
Sometimes it's a good thing to be reminded to appreciate what we have. I do.
