It's Still Raining!

It's the only topic of conversation around here. We are now on day 25. There is standing water everywhere. It isn't expected to let up anytime soon.

A Big Year I read a book last year called The Big Year that was about people who tried to view and record as many birds as they could in one year. It was highly competitive and involved a lot of flying around the world and trekking to remote areas. (It was a fun book to read)

Lately I have been reading about people who are taking the "50 Book Challenge" and are reading 50 books this year. Some participate every year. Some keep track for their own enjoyment, some write reviews of each book and some read only classics. I am going to keep track of my own reading this year - and occasionally write my response to a book. I've never kept track of how many books I read, which should be fun. Perhaps it will be my own big year? If it keeps raining like this, I should do fine!

I have a couple of concerns - one is that I love to knit, and if I'm knitting I will need to put books on my new Rio Carbon to listen to as I knit. The other is just that I don't want to make reading a chore or have this challenge change the way I read. Or if it does, only have it change for the better.

I don't know what others do when they can't make it through a whole book. Sometimes you just can't hack it - and sometimes that's after a few hundred pages. Do you give yourself partial credit?

The timing for this is good, since the Stephen King book I just read titled On Writing encourages readers who want to write fiction to read a lot, and that it will help them in their own writing. And since I am already starting to work on writing myself, more reading will be just the ticket! Keep an eye on my progress on the books i'm reading page.
