Fall on the Black Dog Farm

It's been a while since I've written...my new hours at work and lots to do around the property as well as a lack of inspiring ideas to write about have kept me away from the blog the last few weeks. It really is fall now - the air is crisp and cold in the morning, the corn is ready, leaves are falling, and we actually had a full day of rain! It is amazing to me that I was actually ready for it to rain. I'll regret these words in mid-February, but it is the truth. The garden wasn't as great as I would have liked this year, but the melons have been a moderate success, with Collective Farm Woman being a delicious and fragrant honeydew melon. We have had a kazillion figs - too many, actually, but I ate and froze quite a few. Cucumbers, peas and edamame were probably the best vegies - but the squash, melons, basil, and peppers did pretty well, even with the mediocre attention they got! Above is a picture of some of the produce and some rhubarb compote and fig preserves I put up.
