The Birthday Blues
No, it's not my birthday. It was my son Adam's birthday yesterday, though, and it got me started thinking about why we dislike birthdays so much as we get older.
No one likes to think about death - and each birthday brings us closer to that inevitable date. But that's not all of it - I think much of it has to do with mistakes made in life, opportunities let pass, injuries done to others we can't correct, and lack of peace with ourselves. Why look back with regret and forward with dread?
How can we feel young even as we age? I'm still working on this, but it seems to me that the more interests you have, and the more active and open to new challenges you are, the better. Being conscious of the things I spend my time on - and the people I spend it with - is a good start.
