Woodpecker Love
Woodpeckers try to attract a mate by demonstrating their ability to peck, as loud as they possibly can. Our metal roof is the perfect choice for their drum practice.
A local woodpecker has been pounding on our roof for weeks now. He comes and goes, but at least several times a day he is up there pounding his little head off.
I saw two woodpeckers flirting around in the huge cottonwood tree near the house recently, but I guess she didn't think he make the grade, since the male is still pounding away every day. It used to wake us up, but now we just laugh and keep on sleeping.
One year there was a nest in a dead tree we could see pretty easily, and every time the parents would go in or out of the hole the babies made a buzzing sound like a telephone off the hook - loud enough to hear from quite a distance.
